We recently surveyed a group of approximately 300 individuals who said they’ve decided to start a ketogenic diet within the next 30 days. We wanted to learn more about their motivations and goals.
Survey participants were first asked about their primary reason for starting a ketogenic diet. Here’s what we asked them, along with the results:
- 78% — Lose Weight
- 11% — Improve Health
- 4% — Gain Weight
- 7% — Other
Those that chose “Lose Weight” as their answer to that first question, were then asked how much weight they wanted to lose. Here’s what they said:
- 8% — Less than 10 pounds
- 47% — 10 to 25 pounds
- 34% — 26 to 50 pounds
- 11% — More than 50 pounds
That same group who chose weight loss as their primary goal, were next asked about previous diet attempts. Here are those results:
- 41% — Yes
- 59% — No
We asked all survey respondents about the amount of research they had conducted on keto:
- 9% — None
- 18% — A little
- 47% — Some
- 26% — A lot
Lastly, we asked the entire group to share their expectation of how long they plan to follow the keto diet:
- 12% — Less than 30 days
- 55% — Until I achieve my goal
- 33% — For the foreseeable future
To our knowledge, this is the first survey conducted on a group that is planning to start a ketogenic diet and we found the results very interesting — along with some surprises.
While we’re not surprised that most of those starting the keto diet are doing so to lose weight, we didn’t expect the percentage who said it was their primary goal to be as high as surveyed.
Given the publicity keto has received concerning its possible health benefits, we thought it likely that more people start keto for health improvement reasons. However, according to this survey, nearly 80% are most interested in keto for weight loss.
We also didn’t expect the limited time frame most of our respondents plan on following the keto diet. Only one-third said they plan to be on keto for an extended period of time, leaving two-thirds planning to stay on keto for less than 30 days or until they achieve their goal.
From January 7, 2019 to February 7th, 2019, we surveyed individuals who requested our Keto Diet Quickstart Guide (via our website). We asked an initial question to determine if the individual was planning to start a ketogenic diet within the next 30 days. Only individuals who answered “yes” to that initial question were prompted to answer the additional questions discussed above. 313 individuals answered all applicable questions and only the results from those who answered all questions were included here.
